Finished in pale blue with a white top and front-end vee treatment, this 1962 Volkswagen Transporter Single Cab Pickup is a far cry from what Germany was thinking when it was built so long ago. Gary’s Hot Rods and Harleys completed the restoration, which is highlighted by a number of special touches such as black walnut siderails made to specification on a CNC machine to replicate the original metal sides. A slide out, 36-inch, electric, four-burner, gas BBQ Blackstone grill, complete with a custom pocket with an exterior fill valve for a propane tank, makes tailgating even more fun and simple.
Rolling on chrome Porsche wheels with Cooper tires, the brightwork is omnipresent on this pickup, including a unique brush guard, bumpers, bumper guards, twin sideview mirrors and trim. The pickup is powered by a rebuilt 1835cc engine with a custom exhaust system, and the light blue and white interior is fully customized with pleated upholstery, an Empi walnut steering wheel, auxiliary gauges and piped carpeting. Set on an Air Ride suspension system, this 1962 Volkswagen Pickup will be the life of the party, wherever the party may be. Rare, the Volkswagen Pickup series was the perfect solution for various endeavors ranging from small farms to plumbers and electricians to delivery services.
It was also a spectacular complement to the Volkswagen Type 2 Bus. Available in a multitude of cab configurations, the pickup aimed to serve an abundance of needs while remaining an efficient vehicle, furthering its attractiveness. While the planet was covered with Type 1 Volkswagen Beetles, the Type 2 Bus was slightly less common and the Type 2 pickups were even more of a rarity. This one, with its assorted personal touches exemplifies the personality and flexibility of them.
