Now in its fifth generation, the Toyota Supra is often heralded as an absolute halo car, a summit of performance and engineering, and a supercar without the supercar price when it was new. Available with a 3.0L/220 HP inline 6-cylinder engine, the ultimate examples were equipped with the 3.0L/320 HP twin-turbo inline 6-cylinder engine, a powerplant that evolved to include variable valve timing, a benefit this 1997 Toyota Supra Turbo is endowed with. A highly original, right-hand drive example, it is finished in silver and rolls on low-profile tires with painted, five-spoke alloy wheels housing 4-wheel disc brakes.
The body is fitted with the rear tail wing, the rear roof wing and a rear wiper. The interior features the requisite, high-back front bucket seats with patterned cloth inserts on all seats, a center console with a shifter for the automatic transmission, wood-grain dashboard trim and a factory AM/FM/CD/cassette stereo system. Showing 127,541 kilometers (roughly 79,250 miles) on the odometer, the Supra offers occupants a variety of amenities including power windows, power locks and air conditioning. The fourth-generation Supra impressed the press and public alike with its flowing body, astonishingly capable chassis and spectacular engine.
While the non-turbocharged models provided lovely, spirited driving opportunities, the turbocharged version was a bargain supercar. Comfortable, it featured a number of the amenities found in the upscale Lexus, and even in turbo guise it was a car that could be driven with ease on a daily basis. An available Targa top allowed for open-air motoring, and the spacious cargo area made road trips a simple affair. Discontinued for the American market in 1998 with no turbo model available, production continued in Japan until 2002.
