The third generation of the Toyota Land Cruiser was officially introduced in 1960 and quickly established itself as a fabulously robust, reliable and flexible off-road vehicle. It gave Land Rover, Jeep, International Harvester and others a serious run for their money, and Toyota kept the pressure on by ensuring Land Cruisers would be available around the world, taking into account the various needs of various areas and addressing them.
One way to solve a problem is to simply offer a little more room, and the FJ-43 did that by offering a slightly longer wheelbase and body, as well as a utilitarian cargo area with fold-down bench seats on both the left and right allowing for at least four people. Essentially an FJ-40 in all other aspects, the FJ-43 simply brought a more pickup-style value to the market. Interestingly, it was never sold in North America, the scuttlebutt being that America had enough vehicles like the FJ-43 and didn’t need another one mottling the field. However, it was hugely popular in Africa, South America, Asia and the Middle East.
This 1972 FJ-43 was imported from Columbia and has undergone a frame-off restoration. Powered by the standard 3.9L F155 inline 6-cylinder engine and a 3-speed manual transmission, the 4-wheel drive system is equipped with a hi-lo transfer case and front locking hubs. Presented in Sand Yellow with a white top, the interior is upholstered in gray vinyl with black rubber flooring and Sand Yellow metal. Utilitarian is absolutely the call of the day with original FJs, and this one is no exception. Equipped with dual sideview mirrors and a rear-mounted spare, this old-school go anywhere, do anything Toyota is ready to go.
Not likely an FJ model that will be seen often, it is certain to elicit smiles and curiosity.
