Introduced in 1965, the Silver Shadow became Rolls-Royce’s best-selling model over the course of its more than two-decades-long production run. It was a seriously modern-looking and -behaving car in its day: unitary construction, independent rear suspension, automatic chassis leveling and 4-wheel disc brakes. Engine displacement increased from 6.23L to 6.75L in 1969 to compensate for power losses attributed to U.S. emission controls, the same year a long-wheelbase version, such as the car on offer, was introduced. In every regard, this model is competent in traffic conditions today, even in daily use.
This 1971 model still has the classic look of the early Silver Shadows, most notably the elegant chrome bumpers and overriders, but has the much nicer-feeling though still uncommonly light rack-and-pinion steering. Mechanically complex—another way of saying vastly overbuilt with multiple redundant systems—a properly sorted Silver Shadow is a joy to drive and really has no equal among its contemporaries in terms of build quality or sense of occasion. This particular car, sold new and always a resident in Colorado, comes with more than $45,000 in receipts for mechanical restoration work, putting a new owner ahead of the game.
On this particular black car, the Everflex roof Rolls-Royce used on its long-wheelbase versions to disguise the seam from the 4-inch steel extension welded into the rear compartment blends in particularly well. Many of the long-wheelbase models were bought new by corporate clients and, even in private use, were aimed at the chauffeur-driven market, and so the car on offer comes with the optional and rare power-operated glass partition window. Richly appointed and instantly recognizable as a Rolls-Royce, this design has aged very well.
