Introduced in 1955, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud boasted continuous development through the Silver Cloud II, introduced in 1959, to the last of the line, the Silver Cloud III introduced during late 1962. While the Silver Cloud III heralded mainly cosmetic revisions, welcome updates included a handsome new four-headlamp frontal arrangement. Mechanical advancements included a compression increase to 9.0:1 for the aluminum block-and-head 6.2L V-8 engine and enlarged S.U. carburetors, delivering an estimated 20 HP boost. Other Silver Cloud III standard features included a 4-speed automatic gearbox, power-assisted brakes, a radio and heater.
Silky-smooth and uncannily silent in operation, the Silver Cloud III remained the standard by which all luxury automobiles were judged for many years after it was discontinued. The Silver Cloud III sold quite well, with 2,809 produced, a figure enhanced with production continued well into 1966 by fierce customer demand, following the debut of the new unit-body Silver Shadow. Marking the final generation of the Silver Cloud, Chassis No. LSFU103 is one of only 1,072 produced with left-hand drive, confirmed by its build documents verifying it was built to U.S. specification.
Interestingly, those records confirm the car did not receive a “Silver Cloud III” script to the trunk lid, due to the build card stating, “insignia on boot door not required.” Finished in a two-tone Mason’s Black and Rolls-Royce Burgundy exterior finish, enhanced by new tan Connolly leather upholstery, LSFU103 is powered by a 6230cc OHV V-8 engine, rebuilt by a Rolls-Royce specialist and paired with a refurbished 4-speed automatic transmission. Amenities include upgraded R134a air conditioning including a new compressor, drier, hoses, belts and R134a-compatible seals.
The upgraded AM/FM stereo includes additional speakers in the doors and interior panels, all the while maintaining an original appearance.
