To say that this beautifully presented 1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Sedan has been the subject of a no-expense-spared restoration barely does justice to the $500,000-plus lavished on its exacting restoration completed in 2014. And, certainly no other model in the Cloud family is as worthy of such devotion as the last-of-line Silver Cloud III, which represents the apex in development, performance and refinement of a model line that launched the company into the modern era with a true dual-purpose luxury touring car that was to be savored equally by those enjoying whisper-quiet, chauffeur-driven serenity or the glorious commanding vista from behind the steering wheel.
With the introduction of the new Silver Cloud in 1955, Rolls-Royce faced the delicate task of satisfying modern tastes without offending traditionalists. The Cloud’s in-house-produced bodywork, with its gently tapering profile mated to an all-new chassis, achieved that with aplomb. Indeed, so successful was the restrained and informal elegance of the Standard Steel factory body that only a very small proportion of owners commissioned custom styles from the dwindling number of British bespoke coachbuilders. With the Silver Cloud II of 1959, Rolls-Royce made further strides by replacing the aged straight-6 with an all-aluminum overhead-valve 6230cc V-8.
For its final flourishing in 1962, the frontal treatment of the Silver Cloud III was updated with quad headlamps and a lower hood line, while the V-8 was further refined and endowed with more power—Rolls-Royce hinted at 7%. Allied with a reduction in overall weight, the Silver Cloud III was proven at 114 MPH. Other enhancements included individual front seats and lighter power steering. Power windows and air-conditioning complete the specification of this outstanding Silver Cloud III that is further distinguished by a notably modest mileage reading of 19,876.
With a two-tone silver-over-black livery that emphasizes its graceful curves, as well as its comprehensive documentation, this defining statement of the Silver Cloud begs just one question: where will one find another like this?
