French registration title SANS RÉSERVE In 1991, Renault decided to renew its mini bomb to compete with rival GTis, the Peugeot 205 and VW Golf at the forefront. The Clio (Phase 1), perfectly suited for the task, would benefit from an optimised engine, notably with a 16-valve cylinder head, allowing the 1,746 cm³ 4-cylinder from the R19 to develop 140 hp.

The chassis was not forgotten and the looks, with specific wheels and a bulged bonnet, matched accordingly. With its contained weight and optimised running gear, it offered an explosive cocktail, but would only meet with mixed success, overshadowed during its career by the mythical Williams. It appears that between 30,000 and 35,000 Clios were sold, a figure far removed from the 332,942 examples of the 205 GTI, all versions combined, between 1984 and 1994.

The car illustrated on these pages was delivered on 12 July 1995 by Garage Renault-Lille to its first owner, and registered on 28 July 1995. A copy of an invoice dated 10 June 1999 indicates that BBF Tuning garage ordered from Dimma, the Belgian company inseparable from official Peugeot body kits (and preparations), a Clio Maxi 100 kit, and 4 17-inch Monobloc Dimma wheels.
