Perfectly presented, this mid-engined, turbocharged thoroughbred is unmistakably 1980s - a landmark hot-hatch born of the 'Group B' rally era. In 1980, Renault introduced their new R5 Turbo as a pure 'homologation special' to compete in 'Group 4' racing and international rallies. The 5 Turbo was based on the production Renault 5 Alpine, but Renault Sport engineers scrapped the standard front-engine, front-wheel drive layout in favour of a mid-engine, rear drive setup. In 1981, Jean Ragnotti and his co-driver, Jean-Marc Andrie, won the Monte Carlo Rally outright for Renault, and the following year Ragnotti won the Tour de Corse.
In 1984, 'Group B' homologation was sought for the Renault Maxi 5 Turbo to enable it to contest the World Rally Championship and the following year, Ragnotti added another Tour de Corse win with the Maxi 5 turbo. After the first batch of 400 road cars had been made to satisfy 'Group 4' homologation volume requirements, a second generation, known as the 'Turbo 2' was to follow. Offered here at the NEC Classic Car Show 2025 is a remarkably well preserved, low-mileage Renault 5 Turbo 2. Finished in its factory colour scheme of Pearl White paintwork with brown leather and Alcantara interior, this is a standout example of Renault’s rally-bred, mid-engined hot-hatch.
Supplied new to Germany, Turbo 2 chassis #943 was first owned by a Renault dealer principal who fitted a number of rally-inspired upgrades for a more purposeful appearance and soundtrack. These included an aluminium Matter roll cage, a Devil exhaust and Gotti split-rim wheels. Within the document file is a Heritage Certificate confirming that the chassis and engine numbers match, and closer inspection reveals that both the Matter roll cage and the spare wheel are correct for its model year. Today, the Turbo 2 displays just 25,346km (15,750 miles).
It presents sharply, with gleaming Pearl paintwork, uniform shut lines, correct decals, an extremely well kept cabin, and we are informed that it performs just as well as it looks. Maintained by knowledgeable marque specialists, the car had a recent full inspection confirming its excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. Recent work includes correctly refurbished dampers, fitting an equal length manifold, new tyres, and replacement fuel lines.
The accompanying history file is comprehensive including its Heritage Certificate, invoices for professional detailing, numerous invoices for maintenance over the years, MOT Certificates, various supporting documents, and a V5C registration document ready for transfer or export. It is now eligible for historic vehicle status. A road-going version of Renault’s 'Group B' thoroughbred, the Turbo 2 is an essential addition to any collection of landmark performances cars. With the market trend favouring the very best examples, this superbly presented little Renault is absolutely worthy of serious consideration.
