Since inception in 1948, Porsche has produced a wide array of homologation specials specifically engineered to meet international competition requirements while remaining legal for road use. The planned successor to the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning 911 GT1, the Carrera GT entered development by Porsche’s motorsports division in 1999, but FIA rule changes halted endurance-racing plans. Undaunted, Porsche continued with the Carrera GT now repositioned as an elite road car. Production commenced for a 2004 launch and ended in May 2006 with some 1,270 built at Porsche’s new facilities in Leipzig, Germany. Of them, just 604 were destined for America.

Offered with the odometer reading 2,778 miles, this Seal Gray-finished Carrera GT is powered by a midmounted 5.7L/605 HP V-10 engine, making it capable of explosive performance. Acceleration from rest to 60 MPH is achieved in just 3.8 seconds, with the 100 MPH mark shattered in less than 7.0 seconds and a 205 MPH top speed on tap. Delivering the power is a 6-speed manual gearbox and rear transaxle with a simple yet elegant birch/ash gearshift knob recalling the Le Mans-conquering 917 of years past.

Technical specifications are stunning, beginning with the Carrera GT’s carbon-fiber monocoque, racing-style reinforced safety cockpit design and aluminum subframe structures produced and assembled by Italy’s ATR Composites. Both clutch and brake components employ ceramic composite materials, and both the engine and transaxle mounts are of carbon-reinforced plastic. Even the massive five-spoke wheels are made from ultralightweight forged magnesium. Underpinnings include ABS 4-wheel Porsche Ceramic Composite disc brakes and a competition-derived suspension including pushrod-actuated inboard coil over shocks.

Similar to other contemporary Porsche models, an automated rear wing deploys above 70 MPH. The racing-style, reinforced cockpit safety design includes front and side-impact airbags, removable carbon-fiber roof panels, Ascot Brown leather Bucket XT seats, plus air conditioning, a lightweight galvanized magnesium center console and Porsche Online Pro AM/FM/CD radio. Xenon headlamps, a two-chamber stainless steel exhaust system and yellow-finished brake calipers provide eye-catching final touches. An additional highlight is the Carrera GT fitted luggage set.

While not officially raced, the Carrera GT proved a major success for Porsche as a race-derived supercar and technology demonstrator, with legions of Porsche fans desiring it from new. Here is an opportunity to share in the mystique.
