With hundreds, possibly thousands of road racing victories by both factory and private entrants over more than seven decades, it’s easy to forget that Porsche has also had its share of success on the world rallying stage, including two outright wins in the famed Paris-Dakar Rally in 1984 and 1986. Built to commemorate the 1984 Dakar-winning 911 RS/SC 4×4 driven by Frenchmen René Jean Metge and Dominique Lemoine, this 2023 Porsche 911 Dakar Coupe from the Michael Fux Collection pays homage to that heritage in dramatic fashion with a full complement of exclusive features and an unmistakable off-road personality.
Finished in bespoke Shade Green Metallic paint, it wears the special-order Rallye 1974 graphics package that pays homage to the No. 19 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 driven by Björn Waldegård and Hans Thorszelius to second place in the East African Safari Rally in 1974. Other exterior features on this high-riding 911 include a High Gloss Black trim package (including black-painted brake calipers), a carbon fiber roof panel, the Rallye Design Package stone guards (per a Porsche production steering code) and Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires on white-painted wheels with titanium lug nuts.
High Gloss Black and carbon fiber trim are also used on the window surrounds and exterior mirrors, the latter also housing “911 Dakar” underdoor puddle light projectors. Powered by Porsche’s robust 3.0L/473 HP twin-turbocharged flat 6-cylinder engine driving all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission, the Dakar’s off-road handling capabilities are enhanced by its Porsche Raised Suspension System, rear-axle steering and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control.
Off-road excursions couldn’t be more comfortable thanks to the Dakar’s plentiful interior appointments, highlighted by 18-way powered and heated adaptive sport seats with memory and a heated leather-wrapped GT Sport steering wheel with matte carbon fiber trim. Black leather and Alcantara upholstery are complemented with Shade Green contrast stitching and include leather trim on the steering column, sun visors, painted air vent surrounds and door panels, all part of the Extended Leather Package. Matte carbon fiber also appears on interior trim inlays and the bespoke illuminated door-sill guards.
In addition to the white-face central tachometer and Sport Chrono stopwatch dial, the accommodations also feature Surround View monitor and a premium Burmester high-end surround sound system.
