While Eddie Van Halen was long regarded as one of the best guitarists the world ever knew, it was no secret that he was also a major motoring enthusiast. To his credit was a long succession of cars, including a Lamborghini Miura, which can be heard in the 1984 Van Halen hit “Panama.” He also owned a few customs, a few Ferraris, an Audi R8, a Mercedes-Benz, a 1947 Dodge cabover and a string of Porsches. A certifiable Porschephile, one of his favorites of all times was this 2016 911 GT3 RS, which once held Eddie’s personalized license plates reading “5150B,” a reference to Van Halen’s 1986 album.
Speaking to Car and Driver magazine, he regarded the GT3 as one of the world’s best, commenting on what a spectacularly lightweight driver’s car it is and that with the BBI Autosport suspension modifications, it was the only Porsche he was able to four-wheel drift, in the rain, without spinning out—and he said he spun all of his 911s. Indeed, a race car thinly veiled as a street car, the 911 GT3 RS packs a 4.0L/500 HP flat 6-cylinder engine with a 7-speed Porsche PDK transmission, the stunning combination of a non-turbo engine and rear-wheel drive creating a remarkably visceral driving experience.
Finished in GT Silver with black wheels and a black interior of leather and Alcantara with GT Silver stitching, the car was custom ordered by Eddie Van Halen and features carbon fiber door sill plates with an illuminated VH logo installed at the Porsche factory. As if that weren’t enough, the 911 shows a number of nuggets attesting to Eddie’s stewardship. Dig into the cell phone roster and the memory still shows Eddie Van Halen’s numbers on the list, and the CarFax shows four service records during Eddie’s ownership; meanwhile, the title shows Eddie Van Halen as the owner, and a Certificate of Authenticity with the EVH trademark is complete with Eddie’s signature.
A California car, the odometer shows about 16,168 miles, indicating that Eddie enjoyed driving this car more than just staring at it—and who can blame him. Lightweight, naturally aspirated and rear-wheel drive, the car is an interesting blend of modern and old school.
