Introduced in mid-1963, the 356C marked the final iteration of Porsche’s cornerstone 356-series cars. Continuing with the “Twin-Grille” T6 body design ushered in during 356B production, the 356C featured many detail-oriented updates that may have required close inspection, yet it was a major evolutionary leap forward that carried the 356 to the eventual close of production in 1965. Standard Dunlop 4-wheel disc brakes provided excellent stopping power, a higher-lift camshaft boosted output of Porsche’s air-cooled 1600cc flat 4-cylinder engine, and new flat-face bright hubcaps bolstered visual appeal.
Deeper, more supportive bucket seats were also added, courtesy of Porsche’s acquisition of longtime coachbuilding partner Reutter, which owned a subsidiary that soon gained fame as Recaro, short for Reutter Carrosserie. Featuring the iconic T6 body style, this 1964 Porsche 356C Coupe bears chassis number 218508 and benefits from an extensive restoration, including factory optional upgrades, by longtime Porsche 356 marque expert and concours judge Thomas Drummond. The matching-numbers 1582cc flat 4-cylinder engine retains the three-piece matching original cylinder case with the original matching engine number on the timing cover.
A 4-speed manual transmission and rear transaxle deliver the power. Finished in its factory-delivered color combination consisting of Slate Grey (Code-6401) paint over red leather, this captivating, final-series Porsche 356C is accented by a wood steering wheel with deluxe horn ring, adjustable seat headrests, a Blaupunkt radio with phone connectivity, factory loudspeaker grilles, a red-tip antenna, chrome luggage rack and ventilated chrome wheels with bright hubcaps featuring cloisonné Porsche crests.
