Porsche buyers could choose between normal and 'super' versions of the 1.6-liter Flat-6 in 60 and 70hp respectively - and there was one other option: the 90hp Super 90. Known internally as Type 616/7, the new engine was targeted at the American market, where customers were always pressing for more power. Porsche increased the intake charge with larger valves, increased lift on the cam intake lobes and higher-ratio rocker arms in new magnesium carriers. Aluminum pushrods replaced the former steel units on engines, with aluminum cylinders to match expansion under heat.
The Super 90's 40mm dual Solex carburetors and matching air cleaners were sourced from the Carrera engine and sat atop a new aluminum manifold. Changes to the rotating assembly included 9.0:1 pistons and titanium connecting rods, larger 55mm main bearing journals with integral counterweights and a smaller, lighter flywheel. The Super 90 engine combined with suspension and tire refinements to make the 356B the best road-going Porsche ever to that point, and today the model is a time-honored classic. 4-speed manual transmission.
An excellent nut-and-bolt restoration on a rust-free California car, this Reutter-bodied 1962 Porsche 356B Super 90 Cabriolet presents as original in Ivory with black top and red leather interior. Accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the car exhibits great fit and finish, as well as a highly detailed engine compartment. This Super 90 is well-appointed with optional chromed wheels, VDO gauges and clock, and a Blaupunkt radio.
