This 1957 Porsche 356 Sunroof Coupe sports a matching-numbers 1600cc engine and has been treated to a nut-and-bolt restoration by marque expert Vince Bobba. Presented in the factory-correct color scheme of black with a red interior, the body was taken down to bare metal and the unibody tub was fitted with new floors, longitudinals and jack receivers. Paintwork on this machine is immaculate with proper gaps and panel alignment. Autos International completed the interior restoration, which features red leather seating and side panels with period-correct stitching, oatmeal-colored German square-weave carpet and a white perforated headliner.
The engine has been rebuilt in accordance with factory specification, and the engine compartment is dressed accordingly with the proper Orange Oil Filter Cannister, rebuilt carburetors with the original air-filter housing, original cadmium-plated bolts and powder-coated engine shrouding, and sheet metal. The transaxle has been refurbished as well. Brightwork on the car—square door handles, chrome trim, door trim, headlight rings, quarter window surround frames, directional-signal housings and rear tail-light chrome trim—was restored and rechromed to near jewel-like standards by the highly regarded Victor Miles. Even the wheels have been rechromed and mounted on 165/15 Vredestein tires.
By 1957, Porsche was a small company producing a mere 25 cars per day. The Reutter Karosserie built the 356 bodies in the factory right alongside the Porsche Werks. During this era, Porsche forged a well-deserved reputation for world-class design, construction, performance, reliability and durability that continues unabated to this day. This 356 Sunroof Coupe emerged from the gates of Stuttgart during this period when Porsche cars were largely hand-built using time-honored methods of construction. It’s only fitting that this fabulous car has been restored in current time by a select cadre of 356 restoration artisans.
