In Canada, Pontiac served more of the entry-level market rather than the middle market like in the United States. As such, its cars were very unique as they resembled American Pontiacs but used many components from Chevrolet while also competing more directly with Chevrolet. With names like Strato Chief, Laurentian and Parisienne, Canadian Pontiacs were on par with the likes of Biscayne, Bel Air and Impala. Options like fuel injection and the Turboglide transmission, introduced on the 1957 Chevrolets, were also available on Canadian Pontiacs. The Parisienne was introduced to the Canadian market in 1958 as a sub-series to the Laurentian line, offering many of the same options as the Impala.
It became an independent model for 1959, now serving as the top-of-the-line model for Pontiac of Canada. When Chevrolet introduced the Caprice in 1965, Pontiac of Canada responded with the Grande Parisienne, again demonstrating the closeness of the two makes and the competitive spirit between the two brands. Regardless, starting in 1959, the Parisienne offered more upscale upholstery options, additional brightwork and a larger range of standard equipment for the Canadian market. For all intents and purposes, the Pontiac Parisienne used the Pontiac Catalina architecture, and that sustained for the 1963 model year.
Sold in a variety of body styles, one of the rarest Parisiennes for the Canadian market was the convertible, thanks largely to the cooler climate. Case in point, this Turquoise 1963 Pontiac Parisienne Convertible is one of just 69 built. Fitted with the Chevrolet 327/300 HP V-8 engine and Powerglide automatic transmission, it also uses the Chevrolet frame and suspension, per the Canadian Pontiac formula, and is further equipped with power steering, power brakes, power windows and a power-operated convertible top. This Parisienne also features a Turquoise interior with rare bucket seats and center console with a floor shift.
A Turquoise boot cover is also part of the package, along with a Super Deluxe pushbutton radio, clock and heater. Having emerged from a professional, frame-off restoration, this rare, Canadian 1963 Pontiac Parisienne Convertible rolls on white-stripe tires with turbine-style wheel covers.
