From 1965 to 1970, the Catalina truly embodied the spirit of the muscle car era. These years saw bold design changes, including stacked headlights (1965–66) and sweeping body lines that gave the car a commanding road presence. Engine options ranged from the reliable 389 and 400 cubic-inch V8s to the high-performance 421 and 428 variants, delivering impressive horsepower and torque. The Catalina also offered sporty trims like the 2+2 and Ventura, which added bucket seats, upgraded suspension, and performance-focused styling.
THE CAR OFFERED
Pontiac was at the top of its game in 1967, selling 420,000 full size cars that year. Of those, a mere 1,768 were 2+2s, and 286 of that decline figure were 2+2 Convertibles. Getting even more granular, of all the Pontiacs made that year, only 385 were delivered with the 428 H.O. (High Output) V8 liked to a 4-speed manual transmission.
This Catalina 2+2 428 H.O. Convertible is documented by its original broadcast sheet and records from Pontiac Historic Services. Delivered new to Peter Espteen Pontiac in Skokie, Illinois, it came from the factory in Tyrol Blue over White vinyl with a White top. The first owner was not stingy with options -- 428 H.O. motor (L75), 4-speed manual (M20), Saf-T-Track rear differential (G80), power steering with deluxe steering wheel (N40 and N30), center console (D55), Heavy Duty frame (F35), and more.
Subject of a frame off restoration prior to the current ownership, when acquired by the current owner, the car was finished in its original Tyrol Blue over White--but wanting to recreate the Catalina of his youth, last year the car was repainted black, a black interior kit was installed, and a new black convertible top was fitted. In addition to the cosmetic work, a new set of Redline tires were installed, chrome spotlights were fitted to both A-pillars, and a period-correct aftermarket chrome three-spoke steering wheel was installed (the original has been retained).
This triple black tire burner shows nicely today. One of the rarest iterations of the Full-Size lineup of Pontiacs you can buy, it is the epitome of long and low...but definitely not slow.
