Created o n the idea of Frenchman Franz Hummel, the Ice Race Series International was the first World Championship of Ice Races, organised with the whole team of the 24 Hours of Chamonix. Five rounds will be scheduled, from Ukraine to Canada. The most prestigious of the ice races will take place at the foot of Mont Blanc, in Chamonix. It must be said that the principle of the famous 24 Hours was very appealing: teams of two drivers compete in six half-hour heats. In 2001, the IRSI took on a new dimension with a calendar of five races: Chamonix, Oschersleben in Germany, Sherbrooke in Canada, Kuopio in Finland and Kiev in Ukraine.
These races will be reserved for crews driving cars that comply with the Division 1 Rallycross regulations, which are largely inspired by the WRC. The IRSI regulations differed in several respects from the Andros Trophy: the engines were no longer V6s but 4-cylinder turbocharged engines and, above all, the four wheels were not steered, but only driven. The sporting regulations obliged each team, composed of two or three drivers, to have a passenger in the car. Races were therefore held in pairs, driver and co-driver. This championship was very successful in 2001, 2002 and 2003 as several sponsors withdrew and financial difficulties arose.
The championship was extremely expensive with considerable travel costs from one country to another. The 2004 championship was definitively cancelled due to a chronic lack of snow in Canada. The surviving cars of this championship, as shortlived as it was spectacular, are rare. The story of the Peugeot 206 presented in these pages is above all the story of a family of motorsport enthusiasts. Mr. C, then owner of the car preparation team Techno Di C and his son Pierre Colard, French dirt rally champion in 2000, decided to embark on the great adventure of the IRSI.
The team, whose owner is an industrialist in the watchmaking industry, will be in charge of building the machine without any budget limit. The car chosen will be a Peugeot 206. The bare body is entirely prepared, modified and welded according to the specificities of the WRC regulations. Nothing is left to chance and this real war machine will be built without any budget limit. The engine will be nothing less than a 205 Turbo 16 EVO 2 engine block on which a 405 Turbo 16 cylinder head will be mounted.
A huge turbocharger will feed the engine in a longitudinal position to meet the requirements of the all-wheel drive system, which is entirely custom-made. The Techno Di C team will build a 6-speed sequential gearbox from SADEV parts, gears and bearings. The radiators and the entire cooling system are located at the rear for a better weight distribution, leaving the huge turbo exchanger in a good position at the front to be fed with fresh air. Power output is around 400 hp but the unit will be capable of much more depending on the electronic management. The interior is made entirely of carbon and the custom-made roll cage meets FIA WRC standards.
The 206 is promising and from the very first races of the championship, it fights on equal terms with the great drivers Muller and Ragnotti on Opel to name but two. The valiant 206 finishes the races and signs some poles. In 2002 the championship resumes with two races in Canada. Pierre Colard and his 206 finished 3rd in the IRSI, far ahead of some of the big names in rallying! In 2003, the car finished 20th in the championship, which was already losing speed and financial resources. Since its last race in 2004 the car has always been maintained in good condition and has been used for some demonstrations around the Haute-Savoie region.
Recently it was restarted and revised by the great specialist of the 205 Turbo 16, Mr Duby. It is now aimed at a car sport enthusiast who wishes to participate in the Serre-Chevalier Sprint for example with a still devilishly efficient car. The car is sold with a huge stock of parts, including a second new engine complete with Turbo 16 EVO 2 block, as well as gearbox parts, gears, running gear and bodywork. Some of the mechanical parts in the lot are absolutely impossible to find these days.
