Description from the Hays' Museum Vehicle Plaque: Although the Packard Motor Car Co. of Detroit, Michigan, was known mainly as a builder of fine cars, the company also made quality trucks from 1905-1923. In the teens and early '20s, Packard was generally considered to be one of the four or five best truck makes, but it was also one of the most expensive. The $3,200 price of this 1911 1.5-ton is two to three times the price of the cheapest trucks. Notice the characteristic shape of the top of the radiator grille. This same design was found on all except the earliest Packard cars and trucks and was one of the most famous trademarks ever used.
This truck is one of the smallest trucks Packard made. It has Packard's own L-head 4-cylinder engine, 3-speed transmission and worm-drive rear axle. Packard was also famous in the aircraft and marine fields. Packard engineers were instrumental in the development of the Liberty V-12 aircraft engine of World War I. In World War II, Packard manufactured Rolls-Royce Merlin engines under license for the P-51 Mustang fighter planes and made its own design of V-12 for PT boats. In the early '50s, the company developed turbocharged V-12 diesels for the U.S. Navy.
