Although 1934 was deep into the Great Depression, Packard was still riding on its prestigious reputation as one of the “Three P’s” of the 1910s and ‘20s. One of the significant Packard offerings of 1916-1923 was the fabulous Packard Twin-Six. The original Twin-Six Packard was discontinued in 1923, but in January 1932, Packard introduced a totally new 445.5 CI L-head version developing 160 HP. By 1934, the Twin-Six name was dropped and the new model was called simply the Packard Twelve. The 1934 Packard Twelve 1108 offered here is based on a 147-inch wheelbase chassis (No. 902670) supported by parallel semi-elliptic leaf springs with a solid front axle and live rear axle.
The tires are 7.50-17 wide whitewalls mounted on chrome-plated steel-spoke wheels matched by dual side-mounted spares with painted metal covers. Stopping is provided by mechanical, vacuum-assisted 4-wheel drum brakes. The 12-cylinder engine’s (No. 901752) power is transferred to the hypoid rear axle by a vacuum-assisted clutch and a 3-speed manual synchronized shift transmission. The body of this Packard is by Dietrich and is a Style 4070 Individual Custom Convertible Sedan. This was the only open, four-door body style offered by Dietrich for 1934, and this is one of only an estimated 12 known to exist.
The sheet metal is original and finished in Dark Auburn; it features fenders that have never been removed, and it even retains the original welting. The interior and top have been replaced to exacting standards using the original pieces as patterns during a professional restoration completed by noted marque expert Steve Babinsky of Lebanon, New Jersey, with a book of restoration receipts included with the car. Previously part of the Cassini and Andrews collections, this Packard was sold new by the famous Earle C. Anthony dealership in Los Angeles and is shown in Edward J.
Blend’s book, “The Magnificent Packard Twelve of Nineteen Thirty Four.” It won Best in Class at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, was the CCCA Trophy winner at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, won an Amelia Award at the 2011 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and earned a CCCA Senior Award in 2012. It was also featured in the 2016 film “Live By Night” starring Ben Affleck.
