Packard’s evolutionary approach to vehicle design was not without its occasional downsides, yet for 1934, the strategy yielded an exceptionally elegant catalogue that deftly balanced old and new.
This is on full display on this 1934 Super Eight Coupe Roadster, body style number 759: Long-running details—most noticeably, the upright grille—remained, contributing to the classic, formal appearance for which Packard was well known. Graceful, partially covered fenders, meanwhile, signaled an impending shift toward streamlined design. Beneath the model’s long hood sat a smooth-running 384.8-cubic-inch straight-eight engine mated to a three-speed manual transmission. The chassis further benefitted from features including adjustable Ride Control suspension and Bijur automatic lubrication.
The sumptuous two-passenger Coupe Roadster had styling inspired by a “semi-custom” design provided by LeBaron in 1931, including the distinctive convertible top that folds flush with the body. The Super Eight Coupe Roadster offered here is one of approximately 20 examples known to survive. In 2008, it joined the collection of a caretaker who soon embarked on a refurbishment that began the following year. J&J Restoration of Canton, Georgia performed the restoration, which is documented by invoices and a restoration binder on file.
Thanks to their diligent care, as well as that of the consignor, who acquired the car in 2024, this work has stood the test of time well. The exterior sports a cream body with beige belt molding, orange wire-spoked wheels, and a black convertible top. In addition, this Packard is fashioned with a number of factory options, including dual driving lights, dual horn trumpets, and dual side-mounted tires with covers, as well as mirrors, V-lensed headlights, and a luggage rack.
Every collector should experience the joy of owning a 1934 Packard, and this example, a Coupe Roadster in charming colors on the well-balanced Super Eight chassis, is ripe for the choosing. It would be equally at home at a regional concours, Classic Car Club of America CARavan, Antique Automobile Club of America tour, or Packard Club event.
