Since its beginnings in the early part of the 20th century, Packard quickly set a standard of the highest quality and luxury in its automobiles. This level of quality continued throughout much of Packard’s history, including 1956, as the name Packard still meant luxury to the public. This restored 1956 Packard Caribbean Convertible from the Clyde Horst Collection is one of 287 built and is an example of the company’s efforts. This Packard is based on a 127-inch wheelbase chassis supported by 15-inch steel wheels, 8.00-15 whitewall tires and chrome-plated Packard wire spoke wheels and distinctive hub caps with red cloisonné Packard medallions.
The chassis includes power steering, power brakes and standard Torsion-level automatic leveling suspension for safety. The engine is a special 374 CI OHV V-8, which produces 310 HP at 4,600 RPM with dual Rochester 4GC 4-barrel carburetors and dual exhaust. Power to the rear wheels was directed by an Ultramatic Drive automatic transmission. The Packard Caribbean body was much the same as the 1955, and it is finished in tri-color Dover White, Scottish Heather and Maltese Gray Iridescent. The three colors are separated by a long horizontal trim that leads into the distinctive and iconic massive Packard grille.
Twin chrome scoops accent the top of the hood, and a white convertible top ties everything together. The interior is trimmed in pleated heather and white leather, reversible to tan. Black carpet covers the floors. Pushbutton automatic transmission controls are mounted to the right of the steering wheel. Power windows, a power seat and dual power rear antenna controls are among the tools for the driver. The body-off restoration of this car was completed in 1992, and it shows 68 miles since being restored. The car has been under Clyde Horst’s care for 32 years and has been stored in a climate-controlled facility and detailed twice a year.
This Packard won its AACA Junior First, Senior and Bomgardner Awards in 1992 and its AACA Grand National First in 1994. It received its AACA Grand National Senior and Discontinued Auto National Award in 2014. It is a six-time Preservation Award winner. It won a Class Award at the CCCA Gilmore Concours in 1994 and a Class Award at the 1996 Meadowbrook Concours. The car’s last show appearance was at the 2014 AACA Meet in Tennessee. This Packard will be first choice for any buyer looking for the best and a winner at any show or event.
