Packard saw the introduction of the 1950 models as an opportunity to recognize the new cars as “Golden Anniversary” editions, relating to the production of the first Model B in 1900. By 1950, all Packards were fully into the postwar Clipper styling, and this 2393-5 Packard Eight Station Sedan is an excellent example and was the most expensive of that series. This Packard Eight is built on a 120-inch wheelbase chassis equipped with 4-wheel hydraulic brakes and supported by 15-inch tan-painted steel wheels with chrome-plated Packard badged wheel covers and white sidewall tires.
Packard continued using the advanced independent front suspension introduced in 1937, which provides a well-controlled and safe driving experience. The engine is a 288 CI L-head inline 8-cylinder that develops 135 HP at 3,600 RPM with a single downdraft carburetor. The transmission is a column-shifted 3-speed manual. The body on this Station Sedan is steel with natural finished northern birch framing and maple panels with wood actually inlaid into the steel body structure. This was the final year for a Station Sedan body on any Packard. The body is finished in correct Arizona Beige and is one of 3,864 of this type produced in 1949-1950.
Wide, wraparound, chrome-plated front and rear bumpers with guards protect the body, while a distinctive Packard grille framed by amber fog lights decorates the front view. An optional bright Packard Cormorant mascot tops off the hood. The bench-seat interior is trimmed in tan artificial leather with tan carpeting and gloss wood-grain-finished moldings and instrument panel. An optional pushbutton radio and dual large round gauges are included with the equipment on the instrument panel. The rear cargo compartment floor is beautifully finished in natural-grained wood and chrome trim strips.
This Packard has had a nut-and-bolt restoration completed in 2006 by Antique Auto Shop in Hebron, Kentucky. Any Packard collector or enthusiast would welcome this Station Sedan as a star in their collection, show or tour.
