The Ninety-Eight was one of three convertibles offered by Oldsmobile for 1953, along with the Super Eighty-Eight and the extremely limited production Fiesta. The biggest change for the model year was the switch from 6-volt to 12-volt electrical systems, providing faster and easier starts in all weather conditions and additional operating capacity required by the accessories, which buyers were increasingly loading onto their new Oldsmobiles.

The legendary Rocket V-8 carried over, now offering 165 horsepower—a 5 horsepower bump from 1952. Also new for 1953 were power brakes, available for an additional $33.

One of only 7,521 produced for the model year, this attractive Ninety-Eight Convertible is presented in its factory-correct color scheme of a black exterior over a white and red leather interior with a black convertible top. It boasts a full suite of power accessories, including steering, brakes, windows, driver’s seat, and convertible top; along with a Super De Luxe signal-seeking radio, and a rare-for-1953 Autronic Eye automatic headlight control system. Mated to the car’s famous “Rocket” V-8 engine is a dual exhaust system and optional three-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission.

This Ninety-Eight was acquired by the consignor in 2006. While little is known of its history, a sticker for the Rocky Mountain Oldsmobile Club remains affixed to the windshield.

Evidently treated to a high-quality restoration under previous ownership, the car still exhibits many correct and desirable details throughout. The factory-correct, leather-wrapped padded “Safety” dashboard and extra-thick “Lounge” cushions in the rear are testaments to the restorer’s attention to detail. Period-style wide whitewall tires are highlighted by Oldsmobile’s iconic spinner wheel covers and, at the rear, are ensconced within a set of optional fender covers.

As stunning an example of a postwar car as you will ever see, it is both capable and luxurious, an ideal open road cruiser for the great American highway. Sure to turn heads wherever it goes, this Ninety-Eight convertible will make a great partner for any number of Antique Automobile Club of America or Oldsmobile Club shows or tours.
