The Patrol came about as a postwar necessity of Japan. The government was offering contracts to develop all-terrain vehicles to traverse the various broken roads throughout the country, specifically for use by military, police and fire personnel. It was an important undertaking to get Japan back on its feet and emerge as an international industrial force. The engineers at DAT worked diligently to produce the vehicle, which would be heavily based on the Willys Jeep, introducing the Patrol in 1951 as the 4W60. The Patrol was a solid answer to the demands of the Japanese government looking to rebuild.
It wasn’t long before Nissan realized the consumer marketability of the Patrol and began offering them to the civilian market as well. Nissan was quick to evolve the Patrol with the 4W61 entering production in 1955 with extensive styling revisions and a more powerful 3.7L inline 6-cylinder engine and later 4.0L inline 6-cylinder engine. Meanwhile, 1956 saw the introduction of the very rare 4W66, powered exclusively by the 4.0L. For 1958, the 4W65 replaced the 4W61, and it seemed that Nissan would forever be redeveloping and redesigning the Patrol, earning the company a reputation as one that was always looking to do better.
It wasn’t long before Patrols were being sold throughout the world, but rarely in the United States and Canada—in fact, just over 2,600 were sold in North America between 1962 and 1969, around 975 soft-tops and roughly 1,600 hardtops. Despite the Patrol leaving the North American market in 1969, Nissan-Datsun continually marketed the offroader throughout the world with a fair degree of success. Styling adopted a design more on par with Land Rover, and the company continued to diligently develop the Patrol. This 1977 Patrol was originally purchased in Mosquera, Colombia, and has benefited from a frame-off restoration emerging in orange with a tan soft-top and black interior.
Rolling on light tan painted steel wheels and knobby off-road tires, this Patrol is powered by the 4.0L inline 6-cylinder engine and a 3-speed transmission with a 4-wheel drive transfer case enabling it to use just rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.
