The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has had ten official versions to date; all use two litre, turbocharged engines and all-wheel drive systems. Originally intended only for Japanese markets, demand led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the UK.
The Evolution II was upgraded in December 1993 with handling improvements, wheelbase adjustments and bodywork tweaks. February 1995 saw the arrival of the Evolution III which had more aggressive styling and improved air supply. The Lancer platform was completely changed in 1996 with the engine and transaxle rotated 180° to better balance the weight and eliminate torque steer. The GSR and the RS shared a new twin scroll turbocharger which helped to improve response and increase power. The Evolution VI's changes mainly focused on cooling and engine durability with a larger intercooler and oil cooler, new pistons and new bodywork.
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII was modified again in 2003, this time sporting 17" grey Enkei wheels, Brembo Brakes and Bilstein shocks to handle traction and a five-speed manual gearbox with 234hp to the wheels. It was also the first Evolution to be sold in the US spurred by the success of the Subaru Impreza WRX. With its 2.0 litre, 271hp engine, the Evo VIII was capable of achieving a 0–100km time of 5.1 seconds using a carbon fibre rear spoiler with matching body-colour endplates.
Historics can offer the rare opportunity to acquire one of the few original 260bhp UK specification models in excellent condition and with only 25,000 miles recorded and supported by its full Mitsubishi service history and VOSA declarations.
The 260bhp model was the only fully European-type approved Evo imported by Mitsubishi UK. It’s fitted with twin catalytic converters and boost is turned down to meet full European emission regulations. This certainly doesn’t translate into a lowered performance. The engine is unstressed with block, pistons and con-rods lifted from the Evo VIII MR variant and an EVO VII 9.8T turbo instead of an MR 10.5. The Brembo Brakes are also from the Evo VIII MR as is the five-speed gearbox. It also features the Active Centre Differential and Active Yaw Control.
Finished in the desirable colour combination of Amethyst Black with Recaro sports seats in Black/Blue alcantara. Specification includes: air-conditioning, twin airbags, alloy wheels, electric windows all round, electric mirrors, remote control central locking, Super Active Centre Differential (SACD) and a Brembo Braking System with Sports ABS and EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution). This very well looked after example is also fitted with the Mitsubishi factory immobiliser and alarm and offered at no reserve.
