A year after the John Cooper Works Edition debuted, the kit first became available on the Cooper S. Its first-year status places this nearly two-decade-old car in rare company. Named as an homage to John Cooper, the former English racer and Mini Cooper originator, the upgrade pushed the Mini's horsepower from 163 to 200 HP. It also improved several engine components and added badge embellishments. The mechanical upgrades were not available via the factory and could only be added via retrofitting at dealerships. The result was an 11% reduction of the supercharger pulley size. It also included colder temperature range spark plugs, an upgraded exhaust system and remapped chip tuning.
Decorative badging, individually numbered engine plates and a certificate signed by Mike Cooper embellished the already cool aesthetics to an even more desired status. The coolness factor of the Mini-Cooper was at its height. The car "stole" several scenes in the 2003 film, “The Italian Job,” the remake of the classic 1969 film. The original film starred Michael Caine and Noël Coward, the second rendition featured Mark Wahlberg, Jason Statham and Charlize Theron, but both movies were highlighted by chase scenes and getaway footage in Mini Coopers on the narrow and sometimes step-lined streets of Italy. Complete compact driving fun defines the Mini Cooper.
The 1.6L inline 4-cylinder engine is matched with a 6-speed manual transmission, and the torque rose from 155 to 177 lb-ft at the same 4,000 RPM engine speed. It's all engine efficiency and performance at its finest for a car only 12 feet long, weighing less than 2,700 pounds and with 5.3 cubic feet of cargo. This 2003 front-engined, front-wheel drive, two-door, four-passenger edition is particularly attractive. It has its original electric blue exterior and black and blue interior complemented by a white roof. Comfort features are plentiful: air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power sunroof and cruise control.
For enthusiasts Cooper enthusiasts, this 18-year-old Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works Edition with 27,675 original miles leaves little left to desire.
