Living out NASCAR fantasies is easy with this 1964 Mercury Park Lane Marauder Convertible. Powered by a 427 CI Cammer V-8 that’s been built to 487 CI, the car’s extensive engine build was performed by Kurt Gartner. That V-8 is now equipped with an upgraded MSD ignition, headers and a 2.5-inch stainless-steel dual exhaust system with electric cutouts. The convertible’s 4-wheel disc brakes scrub off speed, and a 3.89 Detroit Locker rear end with Thunderbolt-style traction bars promise crisp launches. A Doug Nash 5-speed manual transmission is fitted with a Centerforce clutch system and a blow-proof bellhousing.
The Mercury is finished in black with black 15-inch steel wheels with blackwall cheater slicks, and Tom Johnson created the red ostrich leather interior, which features bucket seats, a center console and racing lap belts. Like so many Mercurys, the Park Lane Marauder falls in the shadows of the more popular Ford Galaxies, with or without R- and Q-Code 427 CI V-8 engines. Interestingly though, Mercury offered a unique blend of all-out performance and legendary Mercury opulence and sophistication in its packaging of the Park Lane with a 427. It was the brand’s topline offering, packed with unique upholstery, brightwork inside and out, and various amenities that bordered Lincoln.
A true Jekyll and Hyde car, it was all race under the hood. However, in typical Mercury fashion, few knew the car was even available, so it’s said through Mercury and Ford circles that only 42 full-size Mercurys were made in 1964 with the R-Code 427. Finding one today is akin to discovering the Loch Ness Monster or Al Capone’s hidden treasure, so it’s easier to make one and enjoy the benefit of modern technology and engineering.
