The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG roadster – the first model of any marque designed completely in-house at M-B’s famed high performance skunk works – is every inch the solid machine one expects from the automobile maker that wrote the book on endurance-grade ruggedness six decades ago. But that level of performance also takes power and prowess, qualities that set the SLS AMG apart as “the thinking man’s supercar.” The SLS AMG is a formidable presence from any angle, but its real potency resides within.
This is the last Mercedes-Benz to use the AMG-designed M159 naturally aspirated V-8. Dry sump oiling allows it to sit low in the car, and it punches out 563 HP at 6,800 RPM and 479 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 through M-B’s first dual clutch sequential paddle shift gearbox to a limited slip differential. Several modes of gearbox, paddle shifter and stability/traction control allow drivers to tailor the SLS-AMG to their own particular tastes, to best enjoy the car’s balanced and thrilling performance from within the aircraft-inspired cockpit brimming with leather and carbon fiber accents.
A speed-responsive rear deck wing supplements high speed handling, with drilled and vented 4-wheel disc brakes at the ready for quick stops.
