Designed to rule both on the road and the track, this 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is one of only 132 produced for the entire world market, a fact that makes it one of the most exclusive machines ever to carry the Mercedes-Benz and AMG emblems together into battle. The latest of five models chosen for membership in the AMG Black Series club of AMG-modified track-purposed Hot Rods, the original SLS was the immediate successor to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and can be considered the rightful heir to the throne once occupied by the legendary 300SL Gullwing Coupe, itself the direct progeny of the 300SLR sports racers of the 1950s.
Adding AMG’s Black Series treatment into the mix produced what can only be described as a road-legal race car of tremendous capabilities. The SLS’ already crazy-powerful, naturally aspirated, dry-sump 6.2L V-8 engine was massaged to raise output from 563 to 622 HP using modified camshafts and a specially treated high-speed valvetrain, high-flow intake ducting and remapped computer controls. Behind it, the AMG Speedshift 7-speed automatic is mounted 10mm lower in the chassis to drop the center of gravity and located with gas-filled struts to eliminate stress cycles.
The next priority was shaving weight, a task accomplished with titanium exhaust, an extensive substitution of standard exterior pieces such as the hood, intakes, mirrors, front splitter, vents, rear wing and diffuser with lighter carbon-fiber, and a lithium-ion battery. The SLS AMG Black Series’ unusual mix of gentlemanly road manners and on-track athletics are made possible by dual-wishbone suspension with AMG Ride Control, speed-sensitive steering, an electronically controlled AMG locking differential, new front stabilizer tuning, carbon-ceramic disc brakes and sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear forged-alloy wheels.
Driven just 3,700 miles and optioned with AMG Solarbeam Yellow paint, a Black Series red-on-black interior with Bang and Olufsen sound, and Black Series Telematics, this 2014 SLS AMG Black Series certainly fits Ian Fleming’s description of the original 300SL: ruthless and majestic.
