The first automobile designed completely in-house by famed Mercedes-Benz performance gurus AMG, this beautiful low-mileage 2011 SLS AMG is a study in bringing the classic and the modern together to create a sublime grand touring machine. The spiritual descendent of the 300SL Gullwing coupe of 1955, the SLS is the successor to the technologically innovative SLR McLaren, itself an intoxicating machine that drew heavily on modern F1 practice. But while the SLR was a collaborative effort with outside partner McLaren, the SLS is pure Mercedes-Benz, including its trademark gullwing doors and a speed-activated rear deck wing.
It may seem passé in these days of carbon fiber structures to use aluminum for the space frame chassis, but the foundation of the SLS, a complex array of sheet and die-cast alloy pieces assembled using adhesive, welding, rivets and fasteners, is so strong that the aluminum body structure could be made extremely light at just 530 pounds. This rigid foundation maximizes the effectiveness of the SLS’s taut suspension, a mixture of aluminum double wishbones, front and rear sway bars and coilover shocks, all modulated by several modes of gearbox, shift points and stability and traction controls available to suit the driver.
The SLS is the last Mercedes-Benz to use the M159 V-8 engine, a dry-sump, naturally aspirated 6.2L powerhouse that delivers 563 HP at 6,800 RPM and 479 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 through Mercedes-Benz’s first dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission and carbon fiber composite driveshaft to a limited-slip differential. AMG also engineered the SLS’s incredibly powerful ABS-assisted disc brake system, which comprises 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers, and 15.4-inch front and 14.2-inch rear discs.
The SLS’s interior is traditional Mercedes-Benz fare: restrained elegance, quality materials, driver-centered ergonomics and gorgeous finishing, highlighted by the full range of features that include a sport steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles, dual-zone climate control and keyless ignition. Beautifully turned out in classic black on black and showing a mere 3,100 miles, this 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG may prove to be as highly prized in the future as the original Gullwing has become today.
