The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was first unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show with European sales commencing in mid-2010; U.S. sales began a year later. As the spiritual successor to the legendary 300SL, this was the first vehicle developed exclusively by Mercedes-Benz's in-house tuner AMG. The SLS was designed by Mark Fetherston and initially released in gullwing coupe configuration, a roadster version was unveiled at Frankfurt in 2011 with production continuing through 2014.
The SLS (for Sport Light Super) was assembled largely by-hand; its chassis and aluminum body shell produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, the engine by AMG in Affalterbach, Germany, and final assembly in M-B's Sindelfingen facility. When introduced, its 6.2-litre 563hp DOHC V-8 was described by AMG as the world's most powerful naturally-aspirated engine. Never one to rest on its laurels, M-B introduced a high-performance Black Series version of its SLS AMG for the 2014 model year. This was the only year the special vehicle was offered - in coupe form only. For all intent and purpose, this was Mercedes-Benz's AMG GT3 race car in road legal form.
The enhanced performance of the Black Series included numerous improvements to the 6.2-litre M159 V-8 engine boosting horsepower to 622. The suspension includes both a lower and wider track from its predecessor and weight-saving measure dropping overall weight 154 pounds. A unique body kit and rear spoiler to enhance aerodynamics are among the exterior changes. According to one internet source, just 132 Black Series were built for worldwide consumption, including this sinister black over black example. Red seat belts and red stitching and accents highlight the black Alcantara and leather interior. Virtually every conceivable option is in-place, too.
