One of just 106 produced in 2008, this sensational Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster is offered with 6,950 miles on the odometer. Immediately after partnering with McLaren in 1995 to contest for the Formula 1 World Championship, Mercedes-Benz resurrected the historic SLR designation to do what it had not done in 40 years: produce a road-going supercar car using the latest in Grand Prix racing technology. In 1955, the resulting product was the 300SL Gullwing coupe and its roadster counterpart, both instant classics based on the contemporary W196 Grand Prix cars and 300SLR sports racers.
In 2003, McLaren-Mercedes introduced the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, a car that conjured both the 300SLR of old and the modern Formula 1 McLaren, and followed that in 2007 with the SLR McLaren Roadster. Both are wonders of 21st century technology, beginning with the core structure: a body shell and chassis made entirely from high-strength carbon fiber composites. Details such as the butterfly wing doors, large lateral fender vents and chromed side pipes evoke the 300SLR, while the arrow-shaped nose and twin-fin front spoiler are clear McLaren F1 references.
The SLR uses a hand-built supercharged 5.4L/617 HP V-8 engine, AMG SPEEDSHIFT R 5-speed automatic transmission and limited-slip differential to produce blazing acceleration and a top speed of 207 MPH. F1 technology dictated the design of the SLR’s suspension system, a compendium of double wishbones with coil springs and front sway bar, traction and stability controls, four-corner leveling and Michelin Pilot Sport tires on 19-inch forged chrome vented wheels guaranteeing a superb ride at any speed.
A unique rear-mounted 4-position airbrake also contributes to both high-speed stability and the electrohydraulic ABS braking system, which employs 8-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers clamping down on lightweight carbon ceramic brakes. Interior appointments measure up to the SLR’s role as Super Grand Tourer, offering premium leather on the dash, console, doors, armrests, rear cabin panels and body-contoured carbon fiber sport seats, a sport steering wheel with fingertip shift controls, matte chrome instrument panel and a premium sound system.
