Repainted in BMW Yas Marina Blue, this 2011 Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, the final year of the G55 AMG, has a number of personalized touches from the company’s Designo catalog, setting it slightly apart from the norm. The windows have been tinted and feature new seals, a black-finished grille guard has been installed, and the standard black trim has been retained for a black and blue look. Even the wheels are wrapped with Toyo tires and have been powder coated gloss black with a subtle blue ring around the outer edges. The supercharged 5.4L/500 HP V-8 engine and automatic transmission have been engineered to move the G55 effortlessly, breathing out of side-exit exhaust pipes.
The interior features black and cream leather upholstery with memory-enhanced, power-adjustable front bucket seats. The new, custom headliner offers a suede look while a sunroof allows for natural light and breezes. Burlwood interior trim offers a unique contrast to the interior’s overall look. The Gelandewagen, or G-Wagon as it became known in the United States, was originally suggested by Mohammad Reza Shah, the king of Iran, as a military vehicle. Development began in 1972 and the G Model, as it was officially known, debuted for the 1979 model year.
Having proven itself in the grueling environments of the Sahara Desert, the Arctic Circle and various German coalfields as a prototype, there seemed little the G Model wasn’t capable of conquering. Through the 1980s, the G Model evolved and advanced, becoming more luxurious and contemporarily styled along the way, with an extensive revision taking place for 1990, so much so that the chassis designation changed to W463. This was the turning point for the G-Wagon, where it shed a large swath of its utilitarian, military styling for luxuries on par with the company’s S-Class sedan. By 1994, its name became G-Class, falling in line with the rest of Mercedes-Benz’s nomenclature.
In 2001, Mercedes-Benz began officially marketing the G-Class in the United States as a luxury SUV, competing in a hugely saturated market, but faring very well.
