Early G-Wagens were powered by a variety of four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, while three body styles were available: two-door hardtop, two-door convertible, and long-wheelbase four-door station wagon. For 1991 a revised (Type 463) chassis was introduced, incorporating the very latest in off-road traction technology in the form of three electronically engaged differentials in addition to anti-lock brakes.
Cabin comfort had been improved in the late 1980s, but by the early 1990s Mercedes-Benz had recognized the growing market of 4x4 owners who valued style, luxury and power above ultimate off-road capability, and in 1993 introduced the limited-edition 500 GE, a V8-powered model that took the G-Wagen into Range Rover territory. Although it lacked the front locking differential, only needed for the toughest going, the 500 GE came with 240bhp on tap and a luxurious interior trimmed in burr walnut veneer and fine quality leather, which is just what its target market demanded.
There have been countless updates to the Type 463 since then and a host of special variants released, one of the wildest being the Mercedes-AMG G65 (during the 2010s Mercedes-AMG was phased in as the brand name of the company's performance division, replacing Mercedes-Benz AMG). Powered by AMG's 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine developing 621bhp, the G65 accelerates from 0-60mph (100km/h) in 5.3 seconds on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 143mph (230km/h). AMG's Speedshift Plus 7G‑tronic automatic transmission delivers power to all four wheels.
Boasting high ground clearance and long-travel suspension, the Mercedes-AMG G65 offered greater off-road capability than most customers would ever need in an immensely stylish conveyance with not inconsiderable on-the-road presence. Noteworthy features included 21" light-alloy wheels in bronze, silver brake calipers, AMG Sport trim strips to the sides, and numerous bronze-colored accents. As one would expect, this special model also featured a high-quality leather trimmed interior. Comfort was assured thanks to multi-contour seating with cooled/heated seats for the driver and front passenger.

A $15,000 option, the Alien Green Edition included the vibrant paint, as well as carbon fiber interior trim—likely to save a few ounces off the nearly 6,000-pound curb weight. If that wasn't enough, the $3,300 Night Package was ticked adding Obsidian Black wheel arch flares, roof, bumpers, and mirrors as well as tinted windows. Finally, the interior was upgraded with the $1,200 Designo Nappa Leather option and the carpets were protected with the option $200 floor mats. Out the door, the window sticker shows a price of over $236,000.
Since rolling off the lot of Smith Hill Motors of Haverhill outside of Boston, the G65 has been meticulously maintained and well kept. Having covered a mere 5,000 miles a year since new, only 25,000 miles appear on the odometer when the beast is brought to life. Copious records, including the original window sticker, purchase paperwork, service history from new, and a clean CARFAX report accompany the truck.
