Mercedes-Benz long ago perfected the art of diversifying its model ranges to expand their appeal wherever the opportunity presented itself, and the 2008 CLK63 AMG Black Series Coupe offered here is the perfect illustration. A two-seat high-performance variation of the road-burning CLK63 AMG coupe, the Black Series edition borrows much of its specification from the CLK63 used as the Formula 1 safety car in the late 1990s.
Visually distinguished by the deep and generously scooped front air dam with carbon-fiber side ducts, carbon-fiber rear spoiler and aggressively flared bodywork, the Black Series is also reminiscent of Mercedes-Benz’ German Touring Car Championship racers thanks to its rear diffuser, 19-inch forged-alloy wheels and the four prominent chromed outlets completing its free-flowing AMG Sport exhaust system.
There is more than a mere suggestion of high performance here, and it’s backed up by the AMG-built 6.2L 32-valve DOHC V-8 engine delivering 500 HP through a dual-mode 7-speed SpeedShift 7G-Tronic automatic to a locking differential, with engine, differential and power-steering oil coolers along for the ride to maintain proper operating temperatures. The Black Series also features a fully adjustable AMG Sport suspension system with adjustable front camber and rear-axle toe, and wider front and rear track.
A racer at heart, the Black Series also pays its occupants the courtesy of comfort, offering 10-way power heated AMG front sport bucket seats with driver-side pneumatically adjustable side bolsters, dual lumbar and thigh supports, and 3-position memory. Air conditioning, navigation and an AM/FM/CD sound system are all present and accounted for; carbon-fiber trim is judiciously employed, and the rear seats feature 60/40 split backs and flip-forward seat cushions.
