Produced between 1987 and 1993, the 300CE was built in limited numbers in the traditional manner of classic Mercedes-Benz coupés, being one of the very best specified and most luxuriously equipped models in the range. Outwardly similar to the 200CE Coupé, the 300CE was powered by a Type M103 2,960cc single-overhead-camshaft six producing 188bhp, an output good enough for a top speed in excess of 140mph in the case of the manual transmission version. Anti-lock brakes were standard on the larger 'CE', which was also available with the optional DOHC, 24-valve M104 power unit. A 300CE Cabriolet, equipped from the start with the M104 24-valve engine, was an addition to the range for 1992, and when it arrived was the first four-seater convertible from Mercedes-Benz for some considerable time.
As had become the norm by this time, there were a number of AMG performance-enhanced models in the W124 range. Now the official performance division of Mercedes-Benz, AMG has a long history of producing high-performance derivatives of Mercedes' standard production vehicles, and these improved versions enjoy an enthusiastic following world-wide, with prominent figures of the motor sport, entertainment, sport and business communities being counted among aficionados.
In the case of the 300CE Cabriolet, the AMG version features a 3,314cc inline six-cylinder engine, which, with a maximum of 252bhp on tap, represents a significant performance boost over the standard 3.0-litre model. Reportedly, AMG converted only 43 examples of the 300CE, of which only seven were cabriolets. This car's specification includes the following:
