Debuted at Geneva in 1963, the W113 series Mercedes-Benz 230SL enjoyed immediate critical acclaim as the successor to both the 300SL and 190SL, and it introduced the marque’s new single-platform sports car policy. Paul Bracq penned the new SL’s body design, including its sturdy “Pagoda”-style removable hardtop, and veteran engineer Bela Barényi contributed the new SL’s industry-leading built-in safety features. Models progressed through the 2.5L 250SL, which introduced 4-wheel disc brakes, to the final 2.8L 280SL produced from November 1967 to February 1971.

Delivering more power, torque and all-around driving flexibility than its predecessors, the 280SL stands as the most popular and enjoyable evolution of the celebrated Pagoda SL line. Originally delivered from Germany to Ed Potter, Inc., Mercedes-Benz of Columbus, Ohio, and priced at $7,451.20, this 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL was purchased new in 1968 by Dr. George Geanekopulos, who retained it until his eventual passing in 2018. Finished in Dark Olive with a Cognac MB Tex interior, this wonderfully preserved and presented 280SL retains the original soft top and comes with a matching removable Pagoda hardtop. Just 32,954 miles are indicated on the odometer.

Both the matching-numbers 2.8L/170 HP inline 6-cylinder engine and matching-numbers automatic gearbox deliver the power. Desirable features and amenities include bucket seats with a center console, wood-grain interior trim, a Becker Europa AM/FM radio, VDO gauges and clock, a heater/defroster, map light, power steering and a tinted windshield. Chrome roof bars, bumpers and bright trim complete the SL’s iconic good looks. Select mechanical upgrades include new front stabilizer bar links, Bilstein shocks and a stainless steel exhaust system. Correct date-stamped wheels mount Michelin tires.

Accompanying items include a covered spare tire and jack, an original tool kit and keys with a red plastic key holder. Books and manuals include the owner's manual, original service booklet, original Kangol seat-belt instructions and original Becker radio books. Original documents include the original new car sales order form, original window sticker, original factory-issued pink build card and the original memorandum-type certificate of title.
