A classic droptop roadster, this 1992 Mazda Miata Convertible is one of only 1,519 produced in this model year in the one-year-only Sunburst Yellow. Powered by a 1.6L DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual transmission, this sports car has a black bucket seat interior with a matching black convertible top and is fitted with a set of knock-off style wire wheels. First introduced in 1989 for model year 1990, the Mazda Miata was an instant success. Its ethos was that of a simple roadster reminiscent of the British sports cars of the 1960s and ‘70s such as the MG B and Triumph TR-4.
It proved to maintain is basic simplicity, but it was far more sophisticated than its British predecessors with its 4-wheel independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, DOHC engine and 5-speed manual gearbox. This was miles ahead of the British cars with live axles, worm and sector steering, disc/drum brakes, a 4-speed gearbox that oftentimes lacked a synchromesh first gear, and a conventional inline 4-cylinder engine devoid of overhead camshafts. In fact, the new Mazda Miata was directly compared to the Lotus Elan—a brilliant English sports car designed by the legendary Colin Chapman of Formula 1 fame.
Unlike its British forefathers, the Mazda proved to be both exciting to drive as well as easy to maintain and extremely reliable. Its purchase price point was very reasonable at roughly $16,000, although dealers routinely added a premium due to the high customer demand. The brilliance of the Mazda Miata is still acknowledged today, with the car being in production for 36 continuous years and now in its fourth generation of design.
