A landmark model for Maserati, the Quattroporte was the Modena firm's first four-door saloon and its first car to employ unitary construction of the chassis/body. Styled by Frua and introduced at the 1963 Turin Show, the V8-powered Quattroporte was Italy's only luxury four-door saloon at the time.
Parent company Citroën's financial crisis led to Maserati changing hands in 1975, one of the consequences of the upheaval being the delayed introduction of the Quattroporte II. The new model housed the 3.0-litre V6 engine and front-wheel-drive package of the Citroën SM in a body by Carrozzeria Bertone, but did not long survive Maserati's takeover by Alessandro De Tomaso. Its successor - the Ital Design-styled Quattroporte III - arrived in 1979. V8 power was restored for the third of the line - the options being a 4.2 or a 4.9-litre unit, the latter by far the most popular - and the car reverted to rear wheel drive using a lengthened Kyalami floorpan and independent suspension all round.
The model was renamed Royale for 1987, the last year of production. Ultra-luxurious, the Quattroporte was necessarily very expensive and sold in correspondingly limited numbers, with only 2,088 built over nine years.
This example has the 4.9-litre engine and automatic transmission and is finished in the rare colour combination of brown with tan leather interior. The car was delivered new to Meltrade & Consulting SA, rue de l'Orangerie 5, in Geneva, Switzerland on 12th June 1987 (according to the Certificato di Garanzia on file). The current owner purchased the Maserati in June 2021 from Touring Garage Imboden AG in Switzerland. Presented in good overall condition, with approximately 150,000 kilometres recorded, this imposing Italian luxury sports saloon is offered with a Swiss Carte Grise and invoices totalling more than CHF11,000 for various works commissioned by the current vendor over the last two years.

Dessinée par Frua et lancée au Salon de Turin 1963, la Quattroporte à moteur V8 est la seule berline de luxe à quatre portes de la production italienne. Conséquence des problèmes financiers de la firme associée Citroën, Maserati change de main en 1975, ce qui retarde la sortie de la Quattroporte II.
Le nouveau modèle, doté du moteur V6 trois litres et de la transmission à roues avant motrices de la Citroën SM installés dans une caisse signée Carrozzeria Bertone ne survit pas longtemps à la reprise de Maserati par Alessandro De Tomaso. Sa remplaçante, la Quattroporte III dessinée par Ital Design arrive en 1979. La troisième version de la lignée retrouve un moteur V8 de 4, 2 ou 4, 9 litres en option, cette dernière était la plus souvent choisie, et la voiture redevient une propulsion construite sur la base d'une plate-forme rallongée de Kyalami suspendue par quatre roues indépendantes. Le modèle est rebaptisé Royale en 1987, dernière année de production.
Ultra luxueuse, la Quattroporte est donc très chère et diffusée en volume limité : 2 088 exemplaires sur 9 années.
La voiture proposée ici, dotée du moteur 4, 9 litres et de la boîte automatique, se présente dans un rare schéma de teintes marron avec intérieur en cuir fauve. Elle a été livrée neuve à Meltrade & Consulting SA, rue de l'Orangerie 5 à Genève (Suisse) le 12 juin 1987 (d'après le Certificato di Garanzia figurant dans le dossier). Le propriétaire acruel l'a acquise en juin 2021 chez Touring Garage Imboden AG en Suisse. Offerte en bon état général, affichant environ 150 000 km au compteur, cette imposante et luxueuse berline italienne est accompagnée de sa carte grise suisse et de factures d'un montant total de plus de 11 000 francs suisses pour divers travaux commandés par le vendeur au cours des deux dernières années.
