Maserati’s racing history reaches back to the dawn of the automotive age, but it was not until 1957 that the factory turned to passenger car production, beginning with the 3500 GT, a two-seat grand tourer powered by a 3.5L version of the Type 300S sports car inline-6. If that was not enough of a departure from the norm, in 1963, Maserati introduced a luxury four-door coupe, the Quattroporte, at the Turin Auto Salon. Powered by a 4.2L DOHC all-aluminum V-8 derived from the racing 450S, the Quattroporte marked a whole new direction for Maserati, an answer to the competition’s luxury sedans, such as Jaguar’s Mark X and the Mercedes-Benz 200 Series.

The Quattroporte featured elegant Frau coachwork and a roomy cabin upholstered in plush leather, establishing the template for future editions of this four-door Italian GT. Maserati revised the Quattroporte in 1966, adding quad headlights for the U.S. market and replacing the old De Dion rear axle with a conventional live axle; production ended in 1969. An unfortunate takeover by Citroën reduced the second-generation Quattroporte to a made-over Citroen SM sedan that met a mercifully quick end after the Italian government handed control to Alejandro De Tomaso in 1975. Originally slated to appear in 1977, the Quattroporte III reached production in 1979 and continued through 1990.

The new car was unmistakably Maserati, with sleek Giugiaro bodywork and the traditional Trident front grille design leading the way. The 450S-derived DOHC 4.9L V-8 was back, using four Weber downdraft carburetors and driving a Chrysler TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission. Accommodations were also improved with limousine-quality seating front and rear, and the ride quality refined by a new all-independent suspension closely approximating that of Jaguar’s contemporary XJ6 sedan.

Showing a believed-correct 16,211 miles, this handsome black 1985 Maserati Quattroporte offers a Saddle leather interior with front and rear air conditioning, power steering and brakes, power windows, locks and seats, and Yokohama tires on slotted aluminum wheels.
