A belated honor to the company’s 1939 and 1940 Indianapolis 500 wins, the Maserati Indy introduced in 1969 was powered by a 4,136CC version of Maserati’s standard-bearer twin-overhead-cam V-8 engine fed by four Weber 42 DCNF carburetors and rated at 260 HP. The Indy was in the classic Italian GT form, with a ZF 5-speed manual transmission, independent coil-spring front and live leaf-spring rear suspension with front and rear sway bars and vented four-wheel disc brakes. The interior also followed GT practice with contoured seats and a well-laid-out dash with an adjustable Nardi steering wheel and complete instrumentation.

In 1970 the Indy was offered with optional 4.7L and 4.9L V-8s and a redesigned compact instrument cluster with tach, oil pressure gauge and speedometer directly in front of the driver and a horizontal array of auxiliary gauges centrally located over the console. The 1971 example offered here is one of approximately 350 4.7L versions produced between 1970 and 1975. It was delivered new in Italy and imported into the United States before a brief stint in Mexico and finally repatriated back to America. Still powered by the original matching-numbers 4.7L/290 HP engine mated to a ZF 5-speed, it also retains its original Orange paint and Black leather-trimmed interior.

Documented with the owner’s manual, technical manual, service records and import-export paperwork, this is an exceptional Italian GT whose performance and utility made it one of Maserati’s most successful sellers of the period.
