The highlight of the 1971 Geneva Salon was undoubtedly the sensational Maserati Bora. With the Bora's introduction, the great Modenese manufacturer followed other supercar constructors in going mid-engined while at the same time abandoning its traditional tubular chassis in favour of unitary construction. Named after an Adriatic wind, the Bora was the work of Giorgetto Giugiaro's Ital Design, at least as far as its bodyshell was concerned; the mid-mounted engine was Maserati's familiar four-cam V8 in 4.7-litre form, the five-speed transaxle came from ZF, and the all-independent double-wishbone suspension was penned by Giulio Alfieri, co-designer of the legendary 250F Formula 1 Grand Prix car.

One of the first 'new generation' models to appear following Maserati's acquisition by Citroën, the Bora used the latter's hydraulics technology to adjust seats and pedals, raise the headlamps, and operate the excellent power-assisted brakes. A slippery shape plus 310bhp made for a very fast car - top speed was over 258km/h - and the Bora had acceleration, handling and braking to match. The subsequent 4.9-litre version was even faster.

By January 1976, Maserati's management apparently had discussed shelving the Bora but later that year decided to continue. Only some 25 Boras were made that year, and the total produced was only 564, the 4.7/4.9-litre split being 289/235. The type was finally phased out in 1979.

The Bora was a stunning supercar by any standards, both then and now.

A matching-numbers example, this 4.9-litre Bora was ordered on 4th January 1973 and left the Maserati factory on 22nd May that same year. It was shipped to the Grossman Motor Car Corporation, a dealership in New York, USA, and first owned by Mr Elwyn F Boitz of Wayne, New Jersey. In 1984 the Maserati was sold to Randy's Motors in Clifton, NJ and three years later was purchased by Locaban, a company based in Roullet, France. The Bora subsequently ended up in Belgium where it was restored in its original colours by Classic Car Service in 2016. The exterior colour is Rame (copper), which is quite rare, while the interior is trimmed in tan leather.

The current vendor bought this Bora and added it to his private collection of Maseratis. Converted from US to European specification and described by the vendor as in very good condition throughout, this rare 4.9-litre Bora comes with a history file containing a Maserati Certificate (confirming matching numbers); copies of the factory build sheets; and a Belgian Carte Grise.

  • Restaurée professionnellement en 2016 La vedette du Salon de Genève 1971 fut incontestablement la nouvelle et sensationnelle Maserati Bora. Avec la présentation de la Bora, la prestigieuse marque de Modène emboîtait le pas des autres constructeurs de supercars en adoptant le moteur central et en abandonnant simultanément le traditionnel châssis tubulaire en faveur d'une construction monocoque. Baptisée du nom d'un vent de l'Adriatique, la Bora était l'œuvre du studio de style de Giorgetto Giugiaro, Ital Design, du moins en ce qui concerne sa carrosserie.

Le moteur central était le V8 quatre arbres bien connu dans sa version 4, 7 litres, la boîte transaxle à cinq rapports venait de chez ZF et la suspension indépendante par triangles aux quatre roues était signée Giulio Alfieri, un des créateurs de la monoplace 250 F de Formule 1.

La Bora, un des premiers modèles de la nouvelle génération après le rachat de Maserati par Citroën, faisait appel à la technologie hydraulique de Citroën pour le réglage des sièges et du pédalier, pour les phares escamotables et pour les excellents freins assistés. Une ligne fluide et 310 ch en faisaient une voiture rapide – sa vitesse de pointe atteignait 258 km/h – et les accélérations, la tenue de route et le freinage de la Bora étaient à l'avenant. La version 4,9 litres qui suivit était encore plus rapide.

En janvier 1976, la direction de Maserati avait apparemment envisagé d'arrêter la production de la Bora, mais plus tard dans l'année décida finalement de la prolonger. Seulement 25 Bora furent construites cette année-là et le total de la production ne fut que de 564 unités, la répartition entre 4,7 et 4,9 litres s'établissant à 289 pour 235. Le modèle fut finalement abandonné en 1979. La Bora était une incroyable supercar sur tous les plans, tant à l'époque qu'aujourd'hui.

Cette Bora 4,9 litres, un exemplaire à numéros concordants, commandée le 4 janvier 1973 a quitté l'usine Maserati le 22 mai de la même année. Elle fut expédiée chez Grossman Motor Car Corporation, concessionnaire à New York, aux États-Unis, et devint la propriété de M. Elwyn F. Boitz de Wayne, dans le New Jersey.
