Other supercars duked it out in horsepower wars that may or may not have improved the overall car. Maserati conceded the peak horsepower game but developed a car that worked better as a whole. The Bora is well named for the “wild wind.” Acclaimed designer Giorgetto Giugiaro penned the Bora, which was to be Maserati’s modern mid-engine model to compete with national rivals Ferrari and Lamborghini. Pure Italian supercar in appearance, the Bora had a secret weapon up its sleeve—superb handling that wasn’t brittle thanks to its 4-wheel independent suspension. This was a car that could be driven hard without fear of it turning into Mr. Hyde during hard cornering.

The Bora wasn’t trying to out-Ferrari Maranello. It was doing its own thing in a successful manner that did the Trident proud. A fully Italian exotic, yes, but the Bora adjusted the concept in favor of the driver. You didn’t have to be a Formula One ace to drive it and extract most of the performance out of these machines. Boras imported into the United States were powered by a highly tuned 4.9-liter V-8 engine, rated at a robust 320 horsepower, topped with four Weber 2-barrel carburetors and mated to a ZF 5-speed manual transaxle.

The interior delights the senses with deeply laid back-pleated bucket seats, twin speedometer and tach dials, wood-rimmed aluminum-spoke steering wheel plus a bank of rocker switches. It couldn’t be more Italian. Chassis number 930, this Bora is a U.S.-market car, backed with recent service records, original delivery forms from its importation into New York, and subsequent shipment to Los Angeles and Maserati Classiche documentation. Featuring a matching-numbers engine, number AM1071149930, this Maserati has a long history in car-friendly Southern California.
