According to Maserati’s records, this elegant Sebring left the factory on 17 November 1962 and was supplied new in Rome. Finished in ‘Grigio Inglewood’, it had a red leather interior. It showed up again in 1977, registered in the Cantal. It was then bought by a collector from L’Haÿ-les-Roses in 1983, who had the engine rebuilt in 1987, before selling it to a Parisian enthusiast who had the body restored in 1988. A file of invoices shows the work carried out, during which the body was taken apart and stripped to bare metal, protected and repainted.

At the same time, the mechanical components were sent to Jacques Zuliani for the gearbox to be reconditioned and the fuel injection system, which has a reputation for being unreliable, was replaced by three Weber 40 carburettors, as is often done. The superb original red leather interior meanwhile could be kept. Bought at auction in 2001 for the collection at the Château de Vernon, this attractive Maserati, equipped with Borrani wheels and optional air-conditioning (the compressor is missing) has since seen little use. In 2008, at 26,875km, a general service was carried out by Jacques Bourgoin at a cost of more than 12,000€.

At its last safety inspection in 2014, the odometer was reading 27,792km, versus 27,811km today. It should therefore be recommissioned and serviced. The Sebring is one of the last Maseratis powered by an in-line six with dual ignition, an engine developed from competition, and it owes its name to the victory achieved on this track by Fangio and Behra with their 450S: a true GT with noble origins. Buyers are informed that all vehicles in the collection have seen limited use in recent years, having been part of a museum display.

They are therefore sold as-is, require restarting, are not covered by a valid roadworthiness inspection, and will need full recommissioning before being driven on public roads. Please note that when imported into France, the car was registered with the serial number 1547696, which appears on the vehicle registration document and on the type approval plate. This number is different from the original Maserati serial number, which also appears on the car. Photos © Peter Singhof
