This 1961 Lotus 20/22 Formula Junior Monoposto won the 1986 North American Formula Junior Championship with driver Chris Ball. It presents in a period-correct green finish with No. 1 livery and a red interior, and it’s fitted with yellow wheels. It has been restored by Lotus Formula Junior marque expert Peter Denty and features an 1100cc inline 4-cylinder engine (No. 140-90), a Hewland Mk 6 5-speed manual transmission, a Tilton clutch and pressure plate, a fuel cell, alloy radiator, super starter, a fire suppression system and Smiths gauges. Formula Junior is an open wheel racing class initially started in 1958.
The intent of Formula Junior was to introduce a competitive class for single-seater race cars at an affordable entry price point—hence, the rules requiring the cars to be powered by production-based, small-displacement engines that were backed by production-based transmissions, and restrictions were imposed on other modifications such as dual overhead camshaft heads, limited-slip differentials and more. Although the first generation of Formula Junior cars were of front-engine architecture, the world of racing was at a precipice point with the introduction of midengine chassis design. Lotus was one of the pioneer constructors of midengine design with the introduction of the Lotus Type 18.
This was followed up with the subsequent Lotus 20 and Lotus 22. The Lotus proved to be the “class of the field” and still is the major marque of excellence on vintage Formula Junior Racing circles. Raced in Florida at West Palm Beach and Sebring, where the original engine block was damaged and the car was sold to Dan Dubrovich with a new engine by PHP, this 1961 Lotus 20/22 is accompanied by documentation including correspondence between Ball and Dubrovich confirming the car’s history, log books dating to 1985, service records dating to 1985 and a build sheet from PHP.
