Launched in October 1982, Toyota engaged Lotus to assist with engineering work on the Supra. During this period, Toyota became a major shareholder in Lotus, later giving up their holding when General Motors purchased Lotus. Part of the deal between Lotus and Toyota included the use of many Toyota mechanical components in Lotus' cars. The original Excel (aka the Eclat Excel) used the W58 manual transmission, driveshafts, rear differential, 14x7 inch alloy wheels, and door handles from the Supra Mk. II, which was made from 1982 to 1986. The engine was the familiar all aluminium, DOHC 2.2 L Lotus 912 slant-4 engine used in the Lotus Esprit S3.
Registered on 8th August 1985 this Lotus presents very well in red with a cream leather interior. The significant history folder confirms the engine has been rebuilt and clearly this has been a very well looked after example, even the often troublesome pop-up headlamps work as they should. Supplied with a V5C registration document and current MoT test certificate, valid until 1st November 2023, this Lotus is described as driving with no known faults. The 2174cc engine runs smoothly and efficiently and the gearbox operates as it should. These stylish sportscars are great fun to drive and this is no exception when ‘on song’.
