Les années 1960 voient apparaître de plus en plus d'autos sportives issues de conceptions nouvelles. Du côté britannique, Colin Chapman, ingénieur de génie, adapte le concept du moteur central arrière selon ses propres principes: «light is right». Le 46ème projet de la firme de Hethel est une voiture très en avance sur son temps avec un châssis poutre en acier, à carrosserie en fibre de verre. Elle est motorisée par un ensemble moteur/boîte de Renault 16 TX de 1 470 cm3 qui permet à la voiture d'atteindre environ 180 km/h, aidé par un Cx de 0,29 et une hauteur totale d'à peine un mètre qui favorise un centre de gravité extrêmement bas.

L'auto présentée en 1966 respire le sport-prototype et demeure relativement spartiate, avec des vitres fixes, pas de poignées de porte et une planche de bord dépouillée. La voiture évoluera en 1971 avec l'apparition de la Type 54 ou Europa S2, qui adopte des vitres coulissantes, une carrosserie boulonnée, une planche de bord en bois et des sièges réglables. On lui reproche cependant toujours le manque de noblesse de sa mécanique.

Lotus va y remédier avec la nouvelle série de cette étonnante pièce d'ingénierie, l'Europa Twin Cam Special, Type 74. Celle-ci est munie d'un moteur Ford de 1558 cm3 et deux carburateurs double corps

Dell'Orto aménagé par Lotus avec deux arbres à cames en tête développant 115 chevaux et permettant à cette petite bombe de tutoyer les 200 Km/h. En 1973 apparaît enfin la version «Big valves », ultime évolution dont les plus grosses soupapes font culminer la puissance à 125 chevaux. En toute fin de carrière, Lotus éditera une série limitée à 100 exemplaires aux couleurs du sponsor John
