The 1989 Lotus Eclat Excel, often simply called the Lotus Excel, was a refined evolution of the earlier Eclat, offering improved reliability, build quality, and performance. Powered by a 2.2 litre Lotus-built inline-four producing around 160hp, it featured rear-wheel drive and a near-perfect weight distribution. The Excel boasted a lightweight fiberglass body over a galvanised steel chassis, delivering sharp handling and excellent road feel. With styling influenced by Giugiaro and a practical 2+2 layout, it balanced sportscar agility with everyday usability. Though often overlooked, the 1989 Excel represents Lotus’s commitment to driver engagement and engineering excellence during the era.
