Acquired by Henry Ford from renowned auto-manufacturing pioneer Henry Leland in 1922, Lincoln has served as the flagship marque of Ford Motor Company ever since then. While long respected for its grand coachbuilt models of the 1920s and 1930s, Lincoln introduced a revolutionary new concept car named the Lincoln-Zephyr at the 1934 Chicago World’s Fair. Featuring V-12 power and handsomely styled by former yacht designer E.T. “Bob” Gregorie, the Zephyrs featured curvaceous bodies and semi-unitized construction.

Following the 1939 model year, the Model K was available only by special request and ultimately retired in 1940, while the broad Zephyr lineup was joined by the glamorous, low-production Continental in open cabriolet and coupe body styles. Based on the Lincoln Zephyr and again styled by Gregorie in direct collaboration with Edsel Ford, the Continental began as a custom one-off convertible that was readied in time for the Fords’ spring vacation in Florida and proved a hit with their affluent friends, who insisted on a production model of the car. Handsomely styled, the Continental brought European design to America.

Highlights included a lowered and lengthened hood, minimal brightwork, an integral trunk and the dash of the Lincoln Zephyr limousine, including gold-colored interior trim and hardware. First offered for sale as a 1940 model, the Continental was the only car in its class with V-12 power. Despite the three-year pause in civilian auto production from 1942 to 1945, the first-generation Continental’s basic design remained intact through 1948. Its influence remains strong, including display at the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1951.

Finished in white with a tan interior and tan convertible top featuring formal blind rear quarters, this first-year example is one of just 350 Continental Cabriolets produced for 1940. Powered by a 292 CI V-12 engine with two single-barrel carburetors and paired with a 3-speed manual transmission, the Continental is equipped with a new battery and voltage regulator. Power 4-wheel drum brakes provide stopping power. Finishing touches include chrome bumpers, 16-inch steel wheels with hubcaps and wide whitewall tires, and of course, the Continental’s signature rear spare-tire kit.
