In 1938, Edsel Ford wanted something special to drive for his 1939 spring holiday. He commissioned Ford stylist Eugene T. Gregorie to create a special-bodied Lincoln-Zephyr for him that embodied a cleaner, more European look. The result was a lowered and more streamlined Lincoln that would come to be known as the Continental, in deference to its European styling roots. So well received was Gregorie’s design that Lincoln began producing two-dozen hand-built Continentals as early as 1939, with full production of 400 examples starting with the 1940 model year.
On the outside, the Continental was 7-inches lower than the Zephyr, with a long, low hoodline the same height as the front fenders, no running boards and a minimum of chrome trim to detract from the overall styling. Under the skin, the Continental was much the same as the Lincoln-Zephyr, featuring an enlarged 292 CI V-12 engine that pushed 120 HP through a 3-speed manual transmission, all nestled in a conventional frame that was suspended by transverse leaf springs, front and rear, and stopped by hydraulic drum brakes on all four corners. Offered as either a two-door coupe or cabriolet, the example on offer is a 1941 cabriolet finished in black with a sumptuous red leather interior.
